Master Bath Reno

For what seems like way too many months now I have been working on our Master Bath Renovation.  It was a simple and budget friendly update that I had hoped to knock out in just a couple of weekends, but as with most home projects there were a few setbacks.

Before we go any further here is a look at the master bath stripped down prior to its little face lift!

I don't have a good quality pic to show you a before of the window, but prior to the update there was a privacy film on it.  That was the very first thing I removed!  I LOVE natural light and see no reason to keep it out.

The black and white tile floor and subway and marble shower details I am a total fan of so that was a huge relief and cost saver. Basically for this reno we would only be updating the pale green walls, hardware, and decor.

Usually, I can paint a room of this size in a couple of hours.  However, I quickly discovered that the previous homeowners who had purchased our home and did a quick flip within a year (which I am totally grateful for) had pulled wallpaper down and left glue sporadically behind.  Ugh!!! I’ve never seen paint looks so terrible on a wall, total disaster.  I then tried to take on sanding and priming the walls and I lasted for about um...30 minutes!  I had to call in back up aka Daddy to take over.  The smell of the primer was just too much for these little lungs of mine.

In addition to painting the walls, I also gave the window trim, molding, and ceiling a fresh coat of paint.

The abstract artwork I hung where the towel rack used to be is actually printable/digital downloads from Etsy!  I printed the images on cardstock paper and picked up frames from Michael's! I felt super frugal and proud of myself for thinking outside the box.

After the walls were done, I started painting all of the hardware.  The lighting fixture, the cabinet handles, even the toilet paper holder.  They were a brushed silver originally.  I try with every room I update to stay on budget and cut costs where I can.  I loved our hardware just not the color.  So out came my trusty bottle of spray paint.  I could not get over what a difference the color change made.  I also changed our current mirror from white to black to add a more dramatic contrast to the white walls.

Next I had Scott step in to help and we tackled the shelving.  I’ll be honest, the shelving was a vision I was determined to bring to life.  I knew I not only wanted to see these handmade shelves by Scott and I in our master bath, but I also wanted to see them in the

Did I mention the store opens THIS WEEK and these darling shelves can be YOURS?!

Finally, everything was in place and it was time to pull in the décor, my favorite part.

In the end this small renovation took longer than expected, but I couldn't be happier with the end results. The space feels bright and roomy and that was my overall end goal.

One weekend soon I hope to tackle a Roman shade for the window, but honestly I am loving all the light that pours in every morning and afternoon!

DIY Ladder for Under $20

Since moving into our forever home and having Fiona I've tried really hard to be more aware of my "frivolous" spending.  When I see something I want, I ask myself a couple of questions...
 1) Is this a need or a want? 2) Can I turn this into a DIY and cut the cost?

I truly love a good project.  Scott just the other day said "I don't think our house will ever be completely finished".  I said, "Of course not, that's the fun in it all"!  When it comes to the style of home I like, it varies.  I love traditional, I love hunting unique antique pieces to add character and a story to tell.  I also love modern.  If I could white wash our entire home and have minimal pieces in our home that would totally work for me.  Then there's that side of me that longs for what I knew growing up in the country.  I love a good farmhouse, but I love to see a farmhouse mixed with modern touches.  So you see I'm all over the place and with that being said, this is why I try not to invest too much money in the pieces I buy.  Chances are in a month or so I will be mixing things up again.

The first time I saw a ladder placed in a bedroom or family room I knew I wanted to add this touch to our home.  However, this is another one of those pieces I'm not totally sure will hang around for years to come.  So, I told Scott, let's just make one ourselves, and that's exactly what we did and for UNDER $20! Seriously, how great is that?!

So here's all the details!

What you'll need...

Two 6 foot thin pieces (1x2x6′ Pine)
 Two dowels (7/8 x 48in)
Minwax Stain (I went with Provincial)

(You can adjust the size depending on how large or small you would like your ladder)

For this next step I had Scott jump in to help.  This is something I love about home projects because we get to do them together and that always seems to make things more special.

You will want to decide how wide you want your ladder and how many rungs you will want.  We decided to have four.

After the rungs are cut, I simply measured out where I wanted them.  Again totally up to you on where you will want yours.  Next I nailed each rung in to one side of the long slat and then nailed them on to the second piece.

After you have your ladder together you will want to apply 1-2 coats of stain depending on how dark you want your stain.  I just cut up an old t-shirt to wipe the stain on with.

And there you have it! Super easy and inexpensive!

Happy Sunday and Happy DIY'ing!

DIY: The Perfect {Inexpensive} Bookshelf

A few months back I was on the hunt for a simple gold bookshelf.  I found that so many I loved were around $250 and up!  This just seemed a little crazy to me.  So I decided this gold bookshelf I was on the hunt for was now going to turn into a DIY.

After removing the gold element from my search I started to find several reasonably priced shelves that a can of gold spray paint would do wonders with.  I ended up purchasing the Vittsjo Shelf from Ikea in white for just $49.

Next to dress this plain Jane up to her full potential.
A trip to Lowes for a few supplies and we were ready.

Now that we have all the items, it's time to make this doll come to life.
I think it's totally up to you if you want to assemble before or after you paint.  I decided to assemble first, then spray.  Once I had the shelf together I started with the primer.  Even though the shelf was white, I still like to prime as it helps your paint adhere better.  Once the primer was dry, it was time to paint this beauty gold.  In the end I used almost 2 cans of paint.  It never ceases to amaze me what a can of paint can do for a lifeless piece.

The three middle shelves are glass, but the top and bottom are solid, some type of faux wood.
I decided to dress this piece up just a touch more by wrapping the top and bottom shelves in marble contact paper.  Seriously, this made the entire look of the bookshelf!

And...there you have it!

I couldn't be happier with the end result.  Sometimes I find it's the DIY pieces in our home I adore the most.  They just feel a little bit more special to me.

Baby G's Nursery

We are less than two weeks away and I am so very excited to share with all of you our Sweet Baby G's very first room, the nursery!

When deciding how I wanted to style our little one's nursery there were a few things I was immediately certain on.   I knew I wanted it to be bright and clean and I wanted it to really feel like a peaceful oasis.   So many times I have been asked, “How will you ever decorate the nursery when you don’t even know Baby G’s gender?”  For me, this was easy.  Even if we had found out the sex, that wouldn’t have swayed my design plans.  There would be no blue and no pink.  As you know by now one of my favorite color combos is white and gold.  Ok, so I knew immediately white and gold were a must, next it was deciding on a soft shade of color that was gender neutral.  After a trip to Lowes and a handful of paint samples, we decided on Valspar Mint Hint!  It was the perfect pop of color for the nursery.

Next, a “theme”!  I am not one to swoon over the typical baby items, but I did want the room to still reflect the tiny little angel that will soon be joining our family and hearts forever.  I am a huge lover of animals, especially baby animals.   A while back I had spotted the most gorgeous photographs of baby animals by The Animal Print Shop and quickly knew these were a must!  Once we had these prints in hand, the rest of the nursery just fell into place.

For us, the nursery just wouldn't be complete without our two favorite toys from childhood.  Scott's teddy bear wearing the t-shirt he was given when he was born in Okinawa, Japan and my precious Raggedy Ann that I like to call "Rags".

Scott and his close friend Isaac built the changing table for Baby G which makes it that more special.  They even took the sides a little higher with hopes that this Mama-to-be would worry maybe just a tiny touch less.

The closet, couldn't be forgotten.  Shopping for this little one has been a bit challenging, but I have had moments of weakness and purchased gender specific items.  I am doing my best not to shop until Baby G arrives.  For the closet, organization was a must!  So far we have kept things very tidy however, I make no promises on how long this will last!

All that we need now to complete the nursery is our Sweet Baby G!  We have 11 days until our due date, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I would love to meet our precious angel today.  When you are ready little one, we are ready!
